HOW TO NAIL A 15 MIN COFFEE CHAT

There are many things that you can do to increase the odds of securing a new role quickly. A crisp LinkedIn profile, clean 1-page resume, and an articulate cover letter are the first step, but how do you influence your dream company to swipe right?

Meet: the coffee-chat—of the professional variety. Also known as 'exploratory conversations'. These are 102% of the value prop of MBA programs.

It's now the norm to host these virtually, which means you can both leverage this tool from anywhere in the world and significantly more often (a post-pandemic silver lining). Refresher from last week: a deep LinkedIn study found that weak ties are what lead to new job opportunities. A friend of a friend is a friend indeed.

Here's how it works:

1. Find and reach out to potential connections via LinkedIn.

2. Schedule a 15-30 time slot to chat about their experience at their company

3. Actually listen. These conversations are about understanding your new work-friend's experience in their role at their company. This is an 'I saw some opportunities at your company and was hoping to learn more about your path,' -type convo. Whatever you do—don't. ask. them. for. a. job. Really. If they ask about your goals and aspirations—fantastic—but always keep the chat anchored in your interest in their experience.

4. Follow up. 24 hours post-chat, send them a thank you note via whichever mode of communication you were using.

5. Apply to your role. If this chat went really well your new contact may have asked for your resume for their hiring manager. This is ideal as it gives you a direct referral. There are a variety of other great outcomes, but regardless, both of you have now expanded your network in a positive direction. Win-win.
