🏆 Getting Unstuck
Hello from Local Boys - actionable advice for achievers.
GETTING UNSTUCK
I'm hearing the same thing from most friends, colleagues, and clients these days: I'm overwhelmed. I feel stuck. They're up against an internal block that's turning what could be a small next step into a mountain they're too afraid to climb.
That's what this week is about. Turning a climb into a cake walk.

The Power of Small Goals
When there's something we want - a new job, a new business, a new habit - our minds tend to turn into heavyweight helium tanks. We let our imagination run wild and start to make up stories. We talk faster and faster, and before we know it, we sound like rabid chipmunks. Our dream of creating a business has become ruling the industry, our dream of getting a job has snowballed into a mountain of to-do's and networking and self-promotion tactics.
Before we know it, our goal has become a grand plan.
POP.
We deflate. We're overwhelmed.
How do we prevent overwhelm? Look to nature.
Entertain the idea of a bald eagle. They soar high above the forest and must laser in on their prey to survive. How do they find something so small from such altitude?
Long, wide wings give bald eagles the ability to stay aloft and conserve energy by soaring. They settle into their breadth of being to not waste away their energy. Eagles can also change the shape of their lens and their corneas. This shift in perspective allows them more precise focusing in order to reach their prey, their goal.
When it comes to achieving goals, it's important to practice breadth in perspective. By that, I mean understanding our whole experience when we're in a transition. We are not just the person trying to launch a business, get a job, or stick to a gym routine.
We are human.
Recognize that it takes energy just to breathe and be. When you give yourself credit for everything you do to take care of your life outside of a goal, it tends to alleviate the overwhelm.
Instead of asking, "Why am I not doing X,Y,Z to get this done?" Shift to: "How have I spent my time the last few weeks? What have I been prioritizing?"
Explore the breadth of your being and all that you do on a day-to-day basis. Then start to parse out where you may have bandwidth to dedicate towards your goal.
Next? Create small goals.
You may notice that our bald eagle friend isn't Costco grocery shopping. It's on a mission to find prey.
It will choose one piece of food.
It has one singular goal.
It does not carry a shopping cart to load up on all the things it'll need for the next 6 months including eight terrycloth towels that will sit unused in a guest bathroom.
Focusing on one small next step rather than the whole journey allows you to hone your attention on what matters right now.
And that small next step will eventually become a small win. That small win becomes the first reward in a series of rewards that will get you to where you're going.
By creating one achievable next step, you'll be able to rinse and repeat until you really have reached your goal.
Maybe even your grand plan...
PROMPTS FOR GROWTH
What's the #1 goal on your mind right now? Write it down.
What is one small step you can take towards making that goal a reality?
Can you let all other worries, anxieties, and to-do's fade away so you can focus on this one small goal for 10 minutes?
